Souma's Letter

A letter written to Chizuru after the end of the main game. Enjoy his heartfelt letter filled with his inner thoughts and words of affection!

To my dear lady Chizuru.

You must have been quite surprised by this sudden letter.

You may laugh at me and wonder why I would write something like this to you since I am always by your side.

The truth is, I woke up unexpectedly just now, and when I went to check the weather, I saw a beautiful night sky.

Then I remembered looking up at the sky the same way back when I was on the island.

Memories of how I thought of you while looking at the night sky, and how we had exchanged letters many times, all came flooding to me.

Those are precious memories to me.

I wanted to convey those feelings, so I decided to put them into words like this.

I'd be happy if you read this letter all the way to the end.

The first time we met was when I was still a samurai of the Kasama domain.

At that time, I still didn't have a good impression of the Shinsengumi.

Meeting you helped me change my mind about the Shinsengumi.

After that, I met Chief Kondo again and joined the Shinsengumi.

I had prepared myself for a lot of things when I joined, but there was one thing I wasn’t prepared for...

Was the fact that you were a woman.

I can say this now... I think I was very lucky.

That you taught me how to be a page, and that I was given the duty of protecting you.

And then, being by your side and seeing your earnestness...

I began to want to become the man who could catch up to you and protect you someday.

So... I don't regret taking that drug that gave me the power to protect you.

But back then, I was still immature... and in truth, I wasn't able to protect you.

As I traveled from Edo to Aizu and then to Sendai, the executive helped me and entrusted me with many things.

I tried my best to live up to their expectations and continued to wield my sword with all my might.

However I was made painfully aware of my inexperience, and I felt like I was going to break down many times.

But you were there by my side, gently holding my hand.

That was such a great source of comfort to me.

And then, in the mountains of Tohoku, we looked up at the North Star together.

It was at that moment that I decided that I would find my own guide sign, like the North Star.

After that battle, I realized that my guide sign was the Shinsengumi and the way of the samurai.

But when I look at the stars shining along with the North Star, what comes to mind is...you.

To me, the North Star is the Shinsengumi and the way of the samurai.

And the stars that twinkle along with the North Star are you.

I swear on this and resolve to protect you and the way of the samurai.

From now on, I will never stray from the samurai way, and I will never leave your side.

I will love and protect you with all my heart, Chizuru.
